"X-Men. You just don't know when to quit, do you? If you had just let me take Alison back in New York, life would have been so much easier. I only wanted her as a backup in case we weren't able to free Magneto. She could have worked the Gravitron almost as easily as he could."
―Mystique[src]

Mystique (AKA Raven Darkholme) is a member of the Brotherhood, serving as the group's second-in-command. She is also the mother of Nightcrawler and the foster mother of Rogue. Mystique is a very talented shapeshifter, who can assume the appearance of anyone she sees. In X-Men Legends, she is a boss, who is fought three times in the game. In X-Men Legends II: Rise of Apocalypse, she appears as a NPC.

In both games, Mystique is voiced by Grey DeLisle.

X-Men Legends[]

Mystique first appears at the beginning of the game, along with the other members of the Brotherhood. She, Blob, Pyro and Avalanche travel to New York City to kidnap Alison Crestmere, who had just been captured by GRSO Soldiers. After she and Blob succeed in capturing Alison, Wolverine follows them. Later, Mystique encounters Wolverine in Central Park while posing as Cyclops. After she escapes and leaves Brotherhood thugs to deal with the Canadian mutant, Wolverine finally corners her behind the park gates and defeats her.

Later, Mystique travels to the HAARP Research Facility in Alaska, along with the rest of the Brotherhood. The X-Men later encounter her impersonating a human scientist. After Mystique reveals her true self, she and Toad brand the X-Men as traitors to the mutant race. Mystique then orders Pyro to destroy the heroes, while she and Toad escape. However, once they reach the facility's helipad, Mystique and the other Brotherhood members flee Alaska via aircraft, accidentally leaving Toad behind again.

Later, Mystique, along with the rest of the Brotherhood, travel to the U.S.S. Arbiter, where Magneto is being held prisoner. As Blob destroys the Arbiter bit by bit and takes care of the GRSO Soldiers, and while the X-Men rescue the ship's crew, Mystique uses all this as a distraction to sneak into Magneto's torture cell undetected. After freeing her leader and giving him his helmet, Magneto tells her that it's time to put his house in order.

Right after the Arbiter mission, Mystique is fought against again in Central Park in Alison's Danger Room mission.

Near the end of the game on Asteroid M, Mystique encounters the X-Men and reveals to them that she intended to kidnap Alison (now Magma), because she had the power to use the Gravitron to cover the Earth with asteroids, the same way Magneto did. Later, she fights against the X-Men one final time, this time alongside Magneto and Sabretooth. However, despite their combined efforts, all three of them end up defeated.

X-Men Legends II[]

Mystique returns for the sequel, this time fighting alongside the X-Men to ultimately defeat Apocalypse.

She first appears during the intro stage (and its accompanying cutscene) alongside Sabretooth and Magneto. There, they defeat a couple of soldiers, meet up with Wolverine and Cyclops, then all of them reach the room Professor Xavier is being held captive in. During their escape, the previous room shuts out Sabretooth and Mystique, separating the team and forcing these two to find an alternate exit.

Mystique reappears in the Savage Land. Here, she is searching for her best friend Destiny, who she fears has been taken captive by Apocalypse's army. (If Rogue is in the player's party during the first encounter at the entrance, Mystique will have special dialogue.) After a brief encounter with the team, she heads off on her own forcing the player to explore the jungles without her. Eventually, the team gets caught by Garrok but, not for long as one of the native Mutant Bugs attacks Garrok which causes him to release the heroes. The bug is later revealed to be Mystique who returns to her natural form and fights alongside the team in defeating Garrok. Upon his defeat, Destiny appears from a hiding spot and reunites with Mystique who then both return to the Avalon base with a captured Garrok (while the current playable team is left behind to explore the rest of the Jungle area).

Trivia[]

  • In X-Men Legends II, despite being unplayable, Mystique has a few quotes that possibly hints at scrapped playability. These lines can be heard during the opening/intro stage if either Deadpool or Nightcrawler go solo through the stage and teleport past the first room where the cutscene would normally remove Mystique and Sabretooth from the party.
    • "I need help immediately!" - Low HP
    • "How could I lose?" - Defeated
